Spec 1 — sofa seat depth
What it is: the front-to-back distance of the seat cushion, measured from the edge of the seat to the front face of the back cushion.
Why it matters: Italian-designed sofas typically run 95–110cm in seat depth. American sofas (West Elm, Restoration Hardware Cloud, etc.) often run 110–135cm — engineered for lounging, not sitting. For a 5'5"–5'10" Indian buyer, a 110cm seat depth is comfortable for lounging but bad for upright reading or watching TV. Your lower back is unsupported.
What to specify: 95–105cm seat depth for primary living rooms used for daily seated activity. 110–125cm for secondary "lounge" sofas where lounging is the primary use. Always measure the floor model in the showroom — sit fully back, feel where your spine lands.
Spec 2 — sofa seat height
What it is: distance from the floor to the top of the seat cushion (compressed under load).
Why it matters: standard Italian seat height is 42–45cm. For Indian users averaging 5'4"–5'8", 40–43cm is more comfortable — feet rest flat on the floor without pressure on the back of the thigh.
What to specify: 40–43cm seat height for daily-use primary sofas.
Spec 3 — bed height
What it is: distance from the floor to the top of the mattress (post-bedding).
Why it matters: too high a bed (65cm+) makes getting in and out tedious for older adults. Too low (45cm−) makes it hard to use bedside drawers. The right height depends on user mobility — 50–55cm is the comfortable middle ground.
Spec 4 — dining chair seat dimensions
What matters: seat width (40–46cm), seat depth (40–44cm), seat height (45–47cm), and back support angle (98–102 degrees from seat).
Why it matters: a chair comfortable for a 30-minute breakfast can be punishing for a 90-minute dinner. Italian-design dining chairs typically have a slight back-tilt and a contoured seat that distribute pressure across thigh and lumbar without need for a cushion.
What to specify: sit in the chair for 10 minutes in the showroom. If you shift weight at minute 8, the chair won't work for a 90-minute dinner.
Spec 5 — coffee table height and clearance
What matters: coffee table height (typically 38–43cm — within 3cm of your sofa seat height), clearance from sofa edge (38–46cm).
Why it matters: too low a coffee table is useless for resting a wineglass without bending forward. Too high obstructs sight lines.
What to specify: coffee table height should be within 3cm of your sofa seat height. Clearance from sofa front edge to table front edge: 40cm.
Why ergonomics is invisible until it matters
The most expensive ergonomic mistake is "I'll get used to it." You won't. Furniture you don't sit comfortably on is furniture you don't sit on.
SOISU's standard sofa seat depth is 95cm and seat height is 42cm — calibrated specifically for Indian average user height. Custom dimensions (taller users, shorter users, specific room geometry) are offered through our custom programme at 90-day lead time. Send your height and the room dimensions on WhatsApp and we'll specify the right ergonomics for you. If you need ergonomic furniture immediately, ready inventory pieces are available with standard ergonomics.
