The Chinese furniture industry by region

Foshan (Guangdong, south). The largest furniture manufacturing cluster in the world. Top-tier Foshan factories produce furniture indistinguishable from Italian production at 40–60% of Italian cost. Bottom-tier Foshan factories produce furniture that fails within two years.

Dongguan and Shenzhen (Guangdong). Higher-end wood and metal furniture.

Shanghai region. Mid-to-high end, with concentration on contemporary and design-led pieces.

The differentiating factor is not the city — it's which factory inside the city.

How container-load procurement works

A typical buyer (interior designer, vendor, or end customer at scale) does container-load procurement as follows:

1. Sourcing trip or virtual factory tour. 2–5 day visit to Foshan with a translator and freight forwarder. 2. Sample order (1–3 pieces). 4–6 weeks for sample production. 3. Container-load order. Production: 8–12 weeks. Sea freight: 4–6 weeks. 4. Customs and clearance. 14–28% customs duty on furniture. 5. Last-mile transport and unpacking at a Bhiwandi warehouse, then delivery to client homes.

End-to-end: 4–5 months. Cost saving versus retail: 30–60% depending on category and scale.

The four contract clauses that determine outcome

1. Specification with photo and material standards. Frame timber species, foam density, fabric or leather grade, dimensions in millimetres, finish RAL or Pantone code.

2. Pre-shipment inspection clause. Right to inspect the container at the factory before it ships, by a third-party inspector (Bureau Veritas, SGS).

3. Defect remedy and back-charge. Specifies what happens if defects are found post-arrival.

4. Payment terms. 30% deposit, 70% on B/L (bill of lading) — meaning the factory only gets paid the balance when the container is on the ship.

What is genuinely better from China

Modular sectional sofas. Top Foshan factories produce sectionals at quality indistinguishable from Italian production at 40% of cost.

Premium recliners with Italian-designed mechanisms. Many "Italian recliner" brands manufacture the leather upholstery in Italy and the mechanical mechanism in China.

Decorative metalwork. Italian-designed brass, steel, and bronze decorative pieces are often Chinese-manufactured anyway.

Custom large-format furniture. Dining tables 12+ feet long, oversized beds, library installations.

What is not better from China

Solid Italian leather. Italian tanneries are simply better than Chinese tanneries at full-grain water-dyed leather.

Top-tier wooden frames. European hardwood frames are still better-engineered than Chinese equivalents.

Italian design IP. If you want a Cassina or B&B Italia design, you buy it from Cassina or B&B Italia. Chinese knock-offs age very differently.

Where SOISU sources from

SOISU's structural frames, upholstery work, foam, and final assembly are all Indian — manufactured in our own Mumbai facility. Our Italian leather and performance fabric are imported direct from Italian tanneries and mills (Conceria Pasubio for leather, mills in Brianza for performance fabric). The combination is Italian materials, Italian design, Indian assembly — at price points 30–50% below pure import.

For most buyers, the economics work out to ~₹13–35 lakh furniture packages versus ₹25–60 lakh for the equivalent direct Italian import — without sacrificing the materials that matter.
